Tappan Zee Bridge Substructure Repair

Repair of spalls and cracks on the concrete pile cap and pier substructures of the Tappan Zee Bridge. The work required extensive scaffolding and water access utilizing barges, tug boats and water boats. Approximately 45% of the project involved tidal zone repairs of concrete substructures. The balance of the project involved concrete spall repairs on concrete piers extending ninety feet above the Hudson River and live load structural lifting and steel repairs to facilitate pedestal repairs. Due to the access problems and in order to avoid interference with Tappan Zee Bridge traffic, ECCO III Enterprises, Inc. developed an innovative approach to concrete delivery. ECCO III constructed a self contained concrete batching, pump and boom system on a barge so that the concrete could be manufactured upon demand and delivered to any location across the Hudson River to heights of one hundred vertical feet. This system not only addressed the needs of the project but also accommodated the requests of the New York State Thruway Authority, by removing the need for concrete delivery from the structures travel lanes.
