The work for this project included the following construction activities: temporary bridge, bored-in minipiles, pipe piles, steel sheeting, structural excavation, construction of new pile caps, bridge pier, north abutment, lightweight fill, new structural steel, cast-in-place bridge deck, parapet, fencing, sidewalks, and paving.
The project was completed in two (2) stages over a twenty-four (24) month period with an accelerated start in order to achieve partial completion prior to the opening of the new Yankee Stadium. The work was performed adjacent to and above active Metro North Railroad tracks without disruption of service. Close proximity to Yankee Stadium required the project to be staged as not to affect pedestrian and vehicular traffic during the baseball season. Additionally, the MTA and NYC were constructing a new Metro North Station and Pedestrian Overpass under a separate contract within the same contract limits concurrently with this project, requiring extreme coordination efforts to achieve project completion within the required time frame.
