This $55 million project for the New York State Department of Transportation entailed the staged reconstruction of the Long Island Expressway over the Grand Central Parkway, mainline, and service roads. In its existing condition, gaps existed between the eastbound and westbound structures. This project filled in these gaps, thereby integrating the travel ways into a unified structure. The construction included the installation of new 14” cast-in-place pipe piles and foundations. The existing superstructure was completely demolished and replaced; the substructure was demolished and replaced down to the top of footing. New pier caps were installed on the existing piers.
The project also included rehabilitation of the Long Island Expressway over the College Point Boulevard Bridge. This work included deck rehabilitation, partial and full deck repairs, joint repairs, barrier repairs, and overlay.
The project area was located in one of New York State’s highest volume traffic corridors, with the LIE having an AADT of 151,000 and the Grand Central Parkway having an AADT of 189,000 at the project interchange location. ECCO III minimized traffic impacts over a 7-stage construction sequence.
