Rehabilitation of Harlem Line Bridges HA 61.06 and HA 61.36

This project for the rehabilitation of Harlem Line Bridges HA 61.06 and HA 61.36, in Patterson, NY replaced two (2) existing railroad bridges crossing over the Croton River at Harlem Line Mileposts 61.06 and 61.36 in Dutchess County, New York. The existing bridges HA 61.06 and HA 61.36 consist of three (3) span trough decks, each supported by two (2) main girders which span over the Croton River. The abutments consist of concrete bridge seats and backwalls supported by stone masonry walls; the piers consist of concrete bridge seats supported by stone masonry walls, and steel beams are embedded in the concrete bridge seats.

The project scope included the full removal of the existing superstructures, and partial removal of the existing substructures; existing abutments were removed to the top of the bridge seats (existing bridge seats and foundations at the abutments to remain), and pier foundations were removed to one-foot below mudline elevation and abandoned in place. New abutments were constructed on micropiles (with battered micropiles at the south abutments) behind the existing abutments, resulting in a longer bridge structure. To facilitate the work, ECCO III constructed temporary access bridges alongside the existing structures. The new bridges were built entirely offline, on top of the temporary access structures. Over the course of individual extended weekend outages, the demolition work occurred, and the new structures were slid into place.

This project was completed eight (8) months early.
