Located in the City of Mount Vernon, New York, the South Street Bridge and Fulton Ave Bridge were 130-year-old structures that served as important crossways within the city for vehicular and pedestrian traffic, connecting the community and enabling traffic to flow. The objective of this project was to replace both existing aged bridges with new, modern structures to improve traffic, pedestrian circulation, and access to Metro-North’s East Mount Vernon Station adjacent to Fulton Avenue. This project required both Design-Build (DB) and Design-Bid-Build (DBB) delivery elements.
The DB scope of work primarily involved the replacement of the Fulton Avenue and South Street Bridge superstructures and the rehabilitation of the substructures. The DBB portion included the relocation of Metro-North Railroad (MNR) sidepower at both bridges, the replacement of MNR electrical equipment in the PB-1 Substation Yard, and the installation of the Mount Vernon Cut (MVC) access staircase and track-level lighting.
